Keeping houseplants happy is much more simple than many might think.
Believe me talking to them won't help much, but proper care goes a long way toward plant happiness.
Here are five basic rules for plant care that may change the life of a plant near you:
-
Almost all houseplants need lots of sunshine,
but it must be the right kind ! Most plants
prefer a window with a southern exposure,
or at least an eastern exposure. They won't
do very well in northern or western
facing windows.
- Don't kill your plant with kindness ! One of the
major causes of death in houseplants is OVER-WATERING ! Your plants will love you if
you water them only when their soil begins to feel dry to the touch.
- Don't make your plant have to swim around in a pot that's too large for it. A pot should be no more than two inches larger than the circumference
of the plant. Some plants, like cacti or succulents, for instance, actually
are happier when somewhat rootbound.
- Temperature extremes are very hard on your plant ! Placing it
too near a heat source will dry out it's foliage, and being in a draft will soon cause it to
start shedding.
- Don't feed your plant during the winter months. From
approximately November to March (on the N. American Continent) most houseplants are dormant
and feeding at that time will cause spindly, weak growth and loss of colour.
